If you are an eligible professional or hospital, you may qualify for incentive payments or reimbursements from Medicare or Medicaid to offset the cost of implementing an electronic health record (EHR) system. In addition, under Medicare there may be financial penalties for eligible professionals who do not achieve meaningful use of EHR system by 2016.

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is the entity responsible for defining the eligibility for professionals and hospitals and establishing meaningful use criteria, as well as determining the incentive reimbursement schedule.
